The Role of AORN in the Ambulatory Surgery Center

Presented by:  Cathy Montgomery, RN, President, Excellentia Advisory Group

AORN has been a reference for many ASC’s for their Infection Prevention policies and procedures. Even facilities that choose NOT to use AORN as a reference, often find surveyors use them in their judgement of best practice. This year AORN has expanded 5 of their Guidelines to include specific information for ambulatory settings. This was an effort to provide a better match for ambulatory surgery centers. We will explain in detail how these guidelines might make incorporating AORN at your facility more plausible. These Guidelines include:

  • Environment of Care, Part 1
  • Medication Safety
  • Reducing Radiological Exposure
  • Retained Surgical Items
  • Transmissible Infections

Additionally, they added/expanded 8 of their Guidelines:

  • Patient Skin Antisepsis
  • Surgical Attire
  • Autologous Tissue Management
  • Environment of Care, Part 2
  • Specimen Management
  • Complementary Care Interventions
  • Local Anesthesia
  • Instrument Cleaning

Because AORN trademarks their Guidelines, we are unfortunately unable to provide the actual documents as handouts. We can however walk you through their practice recommendations so that you can consider updating your policies to be current.
