Temperature Regulation: What is the Fuss?

in all activities of the ASC.  As the infection preventionist, Director Of Nursing or administrator, you are well aware of the quality measures which CMS has identified for the 2020 payment year.  That means we will be collecting data in 2018 and reporting in 2019. One of the identified quality measures is ASC-13: normothermia.  The proposed measure will quantify the percentage of patients having surgical procedures under general or neuraxial anesthesia of 60 minutes or more in duration who are normothermic within 15 minutes of arrival in the post-anesthesia care unit.

DESCRIPTION:  Patient safety is the over riding factor in all activities of the ASC.  As the infection preventionist, Director Of Nursing or administrator, you are well aware of the quality measures which CMS has identified for the 2020 payment year.  That means we will be collecting data in 2018 and reporting in 2019. For those facilities with electronic medical records, this may be a less daunting task as your IT providers are sure to develop a resource to assist in the data collection processes.  For those without EMR’s, the data collection will become a challenge.  Has your facility looked at the resources available for the data collection?  Have you determined how you will identify those patients with anesthesia lasting greater than or equal to 60 minutes?  Have you established how you will meet the criteria of a temperature of 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit within 15 minutes of arrival to PACU?

Before we can explore this quality measure, we first need to understand and recognize the importance of temperature regulation.
