David Shapiro, M.D. is an anesthesiologist from Florida who has had extensive experience serving as a department chair, medical director and board member of several ambulatory surgery centers. In addition, Dr. Shapiro has served as the national medical director on behalf of ASC management corporations, prior to establishing his consulting practice. His areas of expertise encompass a wide range of disciplines including clinical quality, regulatory compliance and medical liability in the ambulatory surgery arena. He is an active participant in numerous surgery center industry activities, and is a frequent speaker at both state and national ambulatory surgery industry functions.

Description

Dr. Shapiro was invited to speak at the annual Infection Prevention Strategies for Ambulatory Surgery Centers conference in Las Vegas to discuss how anesthesia providers play a role in infection prevention in the ASC setting. Dr. Shapiro reviews history as to what started CMS's deep dive look in to ASC infection control issues.  Dr. Shapiro expands upon regulations, accreditation and what is really important for the Administrator and Infection Preventionist to focus on in terms of infection prevention citing that anesthesia is a major area of focus.  Dr. Shapiro discusses how anesthesia could be part of the problem but advocates that they are also part of the solution and that the ASC should work as a team in a multi-disciplinary approach to infection prevention.

Dr. Shapiro sits on several Boards such as ASCA, ASC Quality Collaboration and AAAHC and has played a major role of impacting regulatory compliance change affecting the ASC industry.
